The Letter – Horror Visual Novel is as the title suggests an anime visual novel that is hugely influenced by classic Asian horror films like the ring, the grudge, etc. developed by Yangyang Mobile, presented as a branching narrative game you play as seven characters, friends that have found themselves falling prey to the vicious curse that has festered in the Ermengarde Mansion for years now. The choices you make will shape and drive the story forward, are you going to try and mend a relationship that is about to collapse, or are you going to let it fall apart? Are you going to risk saving your friends despite the consequences or are you going to leave them to their fate? They are all in your hands after all.  

• When we say visual novel we mean it, there are over 700k words in the games with themes of romance, friendship, drama, and horror, but most importantly a heavy emphasis on relationships and character development.
• You will be able to play from the perspective of 7 different playable characters, each with varying personalities and different ways of approaching difficult situations.
• Most dialogue in the game is fully voiced in English which can be turned off and a select number of backgrounds, CGs, and sprites have been lovingly animated.
• As you play the game you will have access to a journal that narrates the events in chronological order and automatically jots down the clues found about the Ermengarde Mansion.

Overall the more I thought about my time with The Letter the more I’ve come to enjoy it. It’s a very ambitious (maybe at some points too ambitious) first attempt at a horror visual novel with excellent art and sound design. However, this does not excuse the poor pacing, weird character decisions, or glitches that I’ve experienced.
